The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

The Good:Sun lets it be known that they will be freeing Java under the terms of the GPL. This is a move in which everybody wins, although I'm holding off on popping open the champaign until it's actually done (weren't some of the bits supposed to have been freed by the end of October?). In any case, we will almost certainly slurp Sun's GPL java into Fedora when all is said and done. Everybody wins.

The Bad: Unfortunate and bizarre moves by Oracle, Novell and Microsoft. That being said, the timing for some of this could have been worse. It certainly gives the FSF a chance to respond in the next GPLv3 draft should it be necessary.

The Ugly: This past weekend "This American Life" did a show on civilian casualties in Iraq. It's fascinating and you should give it a listen: What's in a Number? 2006 Edition. I think it will only be available for a few more days, so grab it now.
